Every now and again I get asked to make the darndest things and when this friend of mine asked If I knew how to make 'shit on a shingle' because he had not had it in a long time and 'boy could he go for some' I was thrown backwards just a bit. Most people dont ask for this kind of thing but comfort for some is an itchy sweater to others. This guy even went so far as to have had some smoky beef he picked up at a 'meat place' in Pennsylvania and thats how it all came to play.
Chipped beef on toast, or SOS (shit on a shingle) as they called it in the army, is nothing more than your basic cream gravy made with dried or semi dried meat poured over toast - I made it a bit more than basic with shallots and butter and green onions....I wont go into detail as to which is the shit and which is the shingle as it seems pretty obvious but besides the name this stuff is pretty OK. I made it. He loved it. End of story.

My mom made this for us when I was younger and it was the only thing she made that I absolutely HATED! Maybe my taste buds have matured by now....

Probably because it's cheap to make and has a lot of protein.

Too funny! My dad ate this during his Navy days, mentioned it once or twice but never elaborated. And if it had looked as good as this, it would've been called something a bit more elegant.

Have never had this one. Heard of it however, from my army guy friends;).Not my cuppa tea, but to each his own and I am most sure your friend did indeed enjoy it.
I've heard of this but have never seen it. You defnitely made it into a gourmet comfort food and a definite heart warmer! Perfect for a weeknight meal.
okay, that's a terrible name for one of my favorite breakfast foods! :) even such a disturbing mental image couldn't deter me from loving chipped beef gravy--it's something i save to eat on special occasions. :)

I don't know where I had been most of my life when heard this title in the first year of married life. We were visiting an old friend of my husband & he was talking about military life & eating SOS when I finally realized it was the nickname for an actual food! Surprised & horrified I actually wanted to try & see what all the SOS talk was about. I tasted, pondered & will always remember the my first SOS experience. Not fave the dish for me but a foodie memory none the less!

I haven't thought of that in YEARS! My mom used to make that for lunches when we were little - the Buddig meat was like .10 cents a package and she could really stretch her food budget with this recipe.

My grandfather and father both called it shit on a shingle. My mother would get furious when they did, so they did it all the more. I won't eat it on the toast. My food must be segregated; it can't even touch. I figure I'm being nice by consuming the white gravy.
I've heard of, yet never had, SOS. You make it look quite fetching, doggy. I can totally see how this can be a comforting dish.

My dad liked this too, no doubt from his stint in the army. We always head it over egg noodles. He called it SOS, my mom called it beef stroganoff. Never liked it but I love that you did a post about it!

I've heard the expression before but didn't know it was a real dish! I just thought it referred to bad food. I think they should officially change the name now - this looks too amazing to be called that.
I used to love this when I was a kid! It was my favorite! But i had it more recently (ok, like 10 years ago now) and find the stuff to be god-awful. Salty and heavy and no-thanks. Its funny how tastes change.
